Freshen up your home (Repaint)

June 1st, 2010

It is widely known that the paint you use on your homes will not really last a lifetime.  So try to check your house now, and see if it is in need for a retouch or a repaint.  It is very important to keep the color of our precious homes in its best.  Choosing the colors is also very vital.  You have to choose the right colors that would give you calmness when your eyes meet them.  We might think that repainting is not important at all, but we have to keep in mind that our homes look best and vibrant if the colors are not dull.

Repainting may cost a lot especially if you are going to hire people to do the job, but you can actually save yourself from these bills and avoid yourself from hanging on those huge digits.  For some of us who wants to have some fun and some bonding moments with the family, then this repainting job can be a great change on how you can make your treasured moments with your family.  You can gather all your kids and give them their brushes, and let them do their art on their respective rooms.  I can still remember how excited I was when I painted the guestroom with butterflies, parks, and the black and white checkered pattern.  You are not only trying to beautify your homes, but you are also creating great moments with your family.  So go ahead and plan your repainting sessions now.  But then again, if the expense does not hurt you a bit, then go get your coach and enjoy yourself watching how your house transforms magically.

Home Childproofing Tips

May 24th, 2010

Do you have a child? Are you expecting one? Do children often visit you at home? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then maybe it’s time for you to consider childproofing your home.  Home accident is the leading cause of death for children and the sad part is that most can easily be prevented.  Just little time and effort and you can provide a child a safer home to grow up in.

Here are some things to consider:

  1. Prevent poisoning – Store chemical, cleaners and flammable substance in a lock storage.  If you have a garage it is ideal to store it there.  Keep medicines in child resistant cap container and store them out of child reach.
  2. Wall anchor – Consider using this on appliance or furniture that can tip over.
  3. Small Toys – Purchase toys that are suitable to the age of your child, since some toys are small enough and can be considered as a choking hazard.
  4. Prevent Drowning – Keep bathtubs drained.  Keep the bathroom door closed and never leave child alone near any container with water.
  5. Fixtures, Furniture and Décor – Place any fixture and décor especially breakable ones, high above the child’s reach.  Also include window curtains and blinds tie cord.  Put covers on electrical outlet specially those that are within reach of the child.  Use soft guard on furniture with sharp edges.
  6. Home Design – If you have a basement or a two or more story home, you may want to consider installing stair gates.
  7. Appliance – Do not let your child near appliance that emits heat like stoves, curling iron, heaters and etc., also avoid carrying hot liquid or food near your child.  Use fan with finger guard.
  8. Water heater – Set water temperature between 120° to 130° F to prevent burns.
  9. Pets – Supervise children when in the presence of animal, if you can avoid animal interaction especially at the early age of the child so much the better.
  10. Emergency – Always keep a list of emergency numbers (Police Station, Doctor and etc.) near the phone.

Home Gutter Clean Up

April 18th, 2010

Believe it or not this is the part of our home that we usually tend to neglect. Probably because rain only comes a couple of months in a year, or because gutters are located overhead that we tend to overlook its existence.  Whatever the reason maybe it is a fact that if we don’t take time to clean our gutters sooner or later they won’t be able to do what they are designed for.  Damages may occur when rainwater gets dammed up that could rots wood gutters and rusts sheet metal gutters.  In some cases the added weight of the dammed rainwater will pull the gutters loose from their mountings.

Ideally cleaning the gutter twice a year is adequate enough but more is required if your home is directly beneath trees.  Even thou cleaning your gutter can save you over $100.00; I must stress on safety first, so if your roof is higher than a single story, you would be better off hiring a professional service.

Things that you need when cleaning your gutter yourself:

  1. Ladder – Do not stand on the top two rungs.  When leaning the ladder against the gutter, it is wise to protect it from bending by placing a piece of wood (2 x 4) inside the gutter.
  2. Gloves – Use heavy work gloves to protect your hands from screw points or sharp metal parts.
  3. Safety glasses/Goggles – Protect your eyes from dust or loose debris.
  4. Portable garbage can – Optional.  This is to minimize more cleaning up later.
  5. Dust mask – Optional.   If you’re not using a leaf blower to clean the derbis.

Cleaning the gutter:

  1. Collect debris and place it in the garbage can.  Start at a drain outlet at the low end of a gutter and work your way to the drain outlet. Tips: It is easier to collect debris when it is slightly damp and not soggy or dried and encrusted.
  2. Use a high-pressure nozzle water hose with an on-off option to wash out the gutter, working toward the drain outlet.  Reminder: This is a messy job.  Try to be extra careful not to splatter mud all over your house.  It is wise to use a scrub brush to help break loose encrusted dirt.
  3. Last but not the least clear any obstruction in the drainpipe, use a water hose to flush out debris and a plumber’s auger to free and pull out debris if flushing didn’t work.

Detached Garage

March 28th, 2010

Detached Garage is a garage that is not connected to your home, they are usually located a few meters away.  People have always debated if it is better to have a detached or attached garage.   Even thou modern day homebuilder have been snubbing detached garage, I would like to elaborate the benefit of having a detached garage.

  1. Security – Most cases of home break in, are done by accessing the access door of an attached garage.  With detached garage door you don’t have this problem.
  2. Safety – Since we usually store flammable substance like thinner, paint and etc., so if ever a fire do broke in a garage, it will be damaging to your garage no doubt about that but it won’t damage your house and endanger your family.
  3. Child safeties – With detached garage we can avoid kids from accidentally roaming into the garage where we usually store poisonous substance like soap, wax & etc.
  4. Renovation – It is much easier and cheaper to renovate or convert a detached garage since you don’t have to compliment it with your house.
  5. Design – There is no limit to the size and height of a detached garage.  As there is no need to style it or build it in accordance with your house designs.

Garage Door moves with ease

March 21st, 2010

Do you ever wonder how a large size garage door can move with ease? If you are one of those people who are curious about how could a garage door be lifted up and pushed down with ease? Here is a little heads up for you, there are mechanisms connected to the garage door that are made up of hinges, springs, bearings and rollers. It helps the garage door moves and believes it or not the key component of this all is just a spring set with a certain tension to it. This helps the garage door to move with ease, without it the weight of a garage door will be a burden for anyone to lift. A quick reminder when dealing with spring tension, always consult trained professionals like Charlotte Garage Door Repairs. I can say with certainty that this is one example of applied engineering at its best.

Electricity Saving Tips at home

March 4th, 2010

Pollution is currently widespread in our surrounding today. In order for us to help reduce risks of having any power shortage, every household needs to do their part in ensuring that we do not waste electricity. Every time we use our television, radio or any other electrical appliances we are consuming electricity and power plants need to burn fuel to supply us with the electricity that we need. Thus when we save electricity, we are reducing air pollution.

Here are a few tips that I made to help us in saving electricity at home:

1. Turn off lights when no one is using them, like in an empty room.
2. Replace incandescent lamps with energy saving compact fluorescent lamps.
3. Unplug appliance when not in use.
4. Do not put uncovered liquid in the refrigerator as this will give more work to the compressor.
5. When using the washing machine makes sure you have a full load.
6. Hang your clothes to dry whenever possible.
