Garage Clean Up!!!

January 10th, 2010

When garage was first conceptualized it was meant to store your car or other vehicle.  But as time passed, it had evolved to a store-it-all area, anything that doesn’t have a designated place in the house usually ended up in the garage.

If you spend more than 10 minutes looking for something in your garage, it usually means one thing, it is time to clean up and get organize, here are a few tips that may help you in this task.

  1. Clean up – Take everything out. Wash the walls and floor, a fresh coat of paint would be ideal. Dust out and oil all motor equipments that have been sitting idle for a period of time.
  2. Sort – Group like things together.  Discard anything that is broken.  You can also segregate the items you may like to sell or give to a friend at this time.
  3. Storage – Put up hooks, brackets and shelves. This will enable you to utilize your wall and provide more space in your garage. You can also purchase stackable plastic bin for small items, just remember to label them.
  4. Visibility – After you are done with the first three steps, check to see if everything is visible, easy to spot and within reach.
  5. Security – Lastly check the garage door to see if it needs any maintenance and repair. In this case, you can contact Charlotte Garage Door Companies which not only pride ourselves of quality service but also offer a very affordable price.

Hands on for a change

January 4th, 2010

Everyday in our life we take care of someone or something that is close to us, may it be our wife, kids, pets or even a car.  Garage doors are no different; they also need some care and maintenance.

Things that you can do to extend the life cycle of your garage door:

  • Maintain a good coat of paint over the wood part of the garage door, as for the metal part wash with soap and water regularly; a coat of wax is also ideal.
  • Lubricate with motor oil all the moving parts except the plastic idler bearing at least once a month, don’t forget to wipe off excess oil with a piece of cloth.
  • Work the garage door manually, if your garage door uses an electric opener, kindly release it when the garage door is down.  You should not have any problem moving it, if it requires an effort to move, more likely you have a problem with the spring tension.  In this case, you should consult for a trained professional. Do not attempt to do the work yourself as it is very dangerous since it is under extreme tension because of the loads they must lift.

If you do not have time to do these check-ups, you can always call a professional like Charlotte Garage Door Companies to do it for you. Remember paying for maintenance is much cheaper than waiting for your garage door to actually malfunction.

Home Repair and Maintenance – They Must Go Together

December 26th, 2009

Home repair and maintenance are two very distinct categories and both are a requirement if you are a home owner. To begin with when we talk about home repairs we are referring to the wear and tear on your home that has already taken place and needs to be addressed. This could be perhaps in your electrical system that has become drastically outdated and needs updating because of safety issues. Then there are of course those leaky taps that are demanding to be changed because of the loss of water and the cost factor involved in this.

Of course we can’t forget the rotting floorboards and the missing tiles from the roof. These are all areas that are classed as home repair. They are something that if they are left unattended can get to the point where what might have been a fairly inexpensive repair can lead to a very costly one.

When we are talking about maintenance we are talking about prevention in the sense that if you keep up on the maintenance aspects of your home you are going to probably end up having to do less home repairs. This means when you see something minor taking place that you attend to it right away. When it comes to maintenance there is not only the indoors to consider but the outdoors as well. Maintenance includes keeping your lawn weed free for example and keeping your flower beds up to standard. Maintenance comes to sealing up any drafts that you have noticed where you are losing heat perhaps during the winter months. If maintenance does not solve the problem then it automatically takes you to the home repair plateau.

Ideally if you really want to get your home in optimum shape the best thing to do would be to start off and do an inspection of your home and make a list of all the home repairs that are required. Tackle these first and get the home in good condition to the point where you can now set up a maintenance program.

Again you will want to do the same thing to walk about and inspect your home and make a list of all of the maintenance that is required and you can go even further and break this down by season.

Once you have gotten everything into place you are going to find that this now becomes a habit for you and you are going to be quite surprised to find out that you’re putting out a lot less money on your home repairs.

Springs Need a Change’n…

November 17th, 2009

Last night in Charlotte we ran into an old garage door spring system that was a tough one.  Our customer who was a sweet elderly lady had a really old wooden door.  The spring broke on the door (which weighed about 140 lbs) and it slammed down. Luckily the door itself wasn’t damaged.  If you want to avoid doing a lot of potential damage to your door or even your operator then you need to check on your springs.  Two reasons to do this are, 1. If your spring breaks while the door is going up it could break a panel, glass or damage the door. 2. The other thing to consider is the harm it can do to your operator.  Operators are not meant to handle the weight of a door.  If the spring isn’t the part pulling the weight of the door that means the operator is doing too much work and will strip the gear in the operator which just isn’t necessary.

If your garage door springs look old or a bit rusty you might want to have them checked out to avoid additional expenses in the near future.  You can call Charlotte Garage Door Guys at 704-900-0700 to schedule an appointment.  We pride ourselves in doing business with honesty and integrity.

Painting Your Home

November 5th, 2009

Whether you are buying a new home, or working on your existing one, an excellent way to give your house a new lease on life is to paint it. Whether you are painting the interior or exterior, you need to choose the colors with careful consideration. Painting your house can be quite costly, so you need to do it right the first time around.

Firstly, we will discuss the painting of the exterior of the home. It is always best to choose a neutral color that you will not get bored with. Before you paint your home, if you live in a townhouse or cluster complex you will need to check with the Body Corporate what colors are acceptable by their standards. Sometimes a darker color, but not TOO dark, can be nice, and will look cleaner for longer. A nice coat of white or a shade of white can also be nice, and will always give a fresh feel to the home. Ensure that you think carefully before you choose a color for the exterior of your home, and take color samples to hold up against the house. Speak to the paint shop assistant, and make sure you are buying a durable paint that will suffer well against rain and the hot sun.

Choosing paint colors for the interior of your home is a whole different ball game. Here you can be more creative. You can either choose to maintain one color for the whole interior house, or a different color for each room. It is imperative that you take the general theme and look and color scheme into consideration before you paint the walls. If you have a strong color and furniture theme in one room, it is better to maintain a neutral color on the walls. Alternatively, you can go all out and choose something bolder for the walls. Make sure you have a good idea of the look and feel you are going for.

In the bedrooms, you can also be a bit more extravagant. Children’s rooms can have murals painted on the walls, but be careful about this, as children can outgrow certain styles quickly. Rather stick to a nice color that the child agrees on.

For general ideas on paint colors – remember that lighter, calmer colors will have a nice effect in the home. Rather use a simple color so that the art pieces and furniture and curtains in the room will be accented nicely.

You can also use these tips when painting your garage door.

Cold Weather Makes Garage Door Parts Break

November 5th, 2009

In the Charlotte area we have been seeing some crazy weather changes.  One day it’s warm and the next day it’s cold…and that equals broken garage door parts.  This time of year we especially see springs and openers break like crazy.  It’s very important to have your garage door checked out this time of year especially if you have had the springs changed in a long time.  It is very common for us to get emergency phone calls early in the morning because a homeowner was leaving for work, they went to open the door  and the spring broke and they were trapped inside their garage.  You don’t want this to happen to you.  A $39 maintenance call can potentially save you hundreds of dollars in service work if something breaks.

We will do a lot of garage door repairs in the charlotte nc area this year.

Garage Door Springs Charlotte NC

November 2nd, 2009

It’s that time of year again, when the weather starts changing.  Of course in North Carolina it goes warm, chilly back and forth.  It seems like the weather can’t make up it’s mind!  It’s natural that when the weather changes it can have a drastic effect on anything mechanical wether its a car, tools in your shed or your garage door.

This time of year it is very common for garage door springs to break like crazy because they expand and contract and the metal can’t handle that too much especially all the tension that is put on it from lifting the door.  So before it gets too cold you might want to check your springs to see how they look.  Because I will tell you this, up and down weather changes do not go well with metal.  You might wake up on a really cold morning getting ready for work you go to open your garage door and BOOM the spring snaps because it can’t handle weight of your door.  We can come out and check your door for you before this happens.  This time of year we get very busy because of this.  Feel free to call us at 704-900-0700 for same day service.

We service all the way from Salisbury to Fort Mill SC.
